Sonny Gray Joins Rarified Air in St. Louis Cardinals History on Monday Night

As the St. Louis Cardinas creep closer to the .500 mark, starting pitcher Sonny Gray is making history because of another solid start on Monday night.

The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Oakland Athletics on Monday night, 3-1, at the Oakland Coliseum.

With the win, the Cardinals are now 8-9 on the season while the A's are 7-10 with the loss.

In his return to Oakland, Cardinals' righty Sonny Gray dominated on the mound again, tossing 6.0 shutout innings. He is now 2-0 in two starts with St. Louis and has an ERA of 0.00. He allowed just four hits and struck out six.

It was also the 100th win of Gray's career. It's fitting that he picked that up in Oakland considering he spent the first 4.5 years of his career with the A's.

In addition to his 100th career win, Gray also joined some rarified air in Cardinals' history, according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com:

Sonny Gray is the 3rd pitcher since at least 1901 with a scoreless outing of 5+ innings in each of his first 2 appearances with the Cardinals, joining:

2022 Jordan Montgomery
2008 Kyle Lohse

Considering the Cardinals have a rich history filled with great pitchers like Bob Gibson, Chris Carpenter and others, that's an excellent accomplishment.

Gray is now 100-85 for his career, which spans 12 seasons now with the A's, Yankees, Reds, Twins and Cardinals. He signed a three-year deal in St. Louis this offseason.

The Cardinals and A's will play again on Tuesday night with first pitch coming at 9:40 p.m. ET.

Righty Lance Lynn (0-0, 2.63 ERA) will pitch for St. Louis against lefty JP Sears (1-1, 5.17 ERA) for the A's.
